Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen’s showing against Barcelona tonight could be season-defining.
The usually reliable star was shockingly bad against bitter rivals Arsenal earlier this month.
On his comeback from injury at the Emirates Stadium, Vertonghen was all over the place. His handball led to an Arsenal penalty which opened the scoring. And in the 86th minute he saw a second yellow card for a challenge on Alexandre Lacazette.

All game, Vertonghen looked uncomfortable against an Arsenal side brimming with creativity and mobility.
The Belgian missed the game against Southampton as a result of his suspension but returned against Leicester City at the weekend, but had some shaky moments once again.
Rattled Vertonghen must make amends following Foyth emergence
It’s a huge game for Tottenham but also for Vertonghen on a personal note.

It was strange to see him have such a bad game in the Premier League, having been one of the division’s most consistent defenders over the years.
Tonight is his chance to dispell talk that he could be on the decline.
He must shine against one of the best sides in the world, or he could end up losing his place to the rapidly developing Juan Foyth.

Foyth also didn’t have his best game against the Gunners, but he has impressed in every other match he’s featured in this term.
He’s currently nursing a hamstring injury so it’ll be important for Vertonghen to make amends against Barca and prove he’s still the man for the job.
