England host Kosovo at the St Mary’s Stadium on Tuesday night and this is the perfect chance for Tottenham Hotspur to do some scouting. While Tottenham representatives will have their eyes on Harry Kane, Danny Rose and other Tottenham players on show, one from the opposition might be of interest.
According to Sabah, Tottenham are keen on Vedat Muriqi. The Fenerbahce striker was watched by Spurs scouts as he scored against the Czech Republic on Saturday. Fiorentina, Lazio and Napoli were also scouting Muriqi ahead of a potential move.
All four clubs would have been impressed by Muriqi’s goal the other day. But the real test will come tonight. As England face Kosovo, Muriqi needs to prove his Premier League credentials against the world’s most expensive defender.
Muriqi vs. Maguire will be a telling battle
Manchester United signed Harry Maguire for £80m in the summer transfer window (BBC Sport). This means that Muriqi will face the mountainous task of tussling with the most expensive defender of all time.
Maguire’s qualities are well-known. He is strong in the air and good with the ball at his feet. Alongside Michael Keane (or Tyrone Mings), England will be tough to penetrate. But Muriqi could fancy his chances.
The 6ft 4in striker is an aerial threat and will back himself against Maguire and the other England centre-backs. If he can get the better of Maguire, then it shows Tottenham that he could hack it in the Premier League.
Fernando Llorente replacement?
Given Muriqi’s style of play, he would be a like-for-like Fernando Llorente replacement. The 25-year-old can hold the ball up and win headers, just like Llorente did for Spurs last season.
There is a void left by the veteran Spaniard since his departure. Aside from Harry Kane, Tottenham have limited options in the striker department. Although he might be expensive (he signed a four-year deal with Fenerbahce this summer), Muriqi might be what Mauricio Pochettino is looking for. Tonight’s game could give him some clues.
