Report: Man City and Chelsea interested in 'one of the best defenders in history'; Premier League outfit lead the race
Chelsea and Manchester City are interested in a transfer for Raphael Varane, according to The Athletic.
The publication is claiming that Manchester United are more likely to do a deal.
The France international is entering the final year of his contract at the Bernabeu. Madrid are ‘increasingly resigned’ to losing the defender, who sees his future away from the Spanish outfit.
Club president Florentino Perez believes he can do a deal for between £40m and £45m for the Frenchman.
The report goes against what was claimed earlier in the week regarding City’s transfer activity.
AS claimed that the Citizens don’t want to sign a central defender in this summer’s transfer window.
Eden Hazard labelled the ace ‘one of the best defenders in history’.
TBR View: Varane would be a pointless transfer for Manchester City
Ever since Pep Guardiola has landed in the northwest, it seems defenders have been his biggest priorities.
As a matter of fact, the club have signed a defender in every season since he became the manager back in 2016.
Last summer was no different as he added Ruben Dias to the side.
The ace has slotted in like a hot knife through butter alongside John Stones, forming a formidable partnership. The partnership has been incredibly successful with the outfit winning a Premier League title and reaching the Champions League final.
It makes reports over wanting to sign Varane all the more confusing. City have no need to purchase another defender, even if it is to increase the overall quality.
Nathan Ake and Aymeric Laporte are the back-up options, and together all four players are a stunning quartet to possess.
A simple comparison between Dias and Varane shows off who is the better player.
With the talent available to Guardiola, a transfer for Varane would be pointless for Manchester City this summer.
