Valentino Lazaro comments on his Newcastle future

Valentino Lazaro has insisted to Newcastle United’s official website that he is not giving any thought to his future beyond this season right now, but added that he is fully committed to the Magpies.

The 23-year-old moved to St James’ Park on loan from Inter Milan during the January transfer window. He has, so far, made four appearances in the Premier League, starting on two occasions for Steve Bruce’s men.

He was sent off against Crystal Palace last month. But he responded in a fantastic manner in his next appearance by scoring in the FA Cup win over West Brom that sent Newcastle into the quarter-final of the competition.

There is a lot of uncertainty about the rest of the season. And that is particularly the case for players out on loan or those whose contract expires this summer.

Lazaro is in that boat, with the Austria international set to return to San Siro unless a permanent deal can be agreed.

And while the youngster gave little away, he did not seem to shut the door when asked about the possibility of extending his stay on Tyneside.

“I’ve had a lot of questions about summer already,” he told the club’s official website. “But what I can say is that I’m fully focused here – I wouldn’t have come here if I wouldn’t be committed to the club. I’m happy to be here, and just focus on that.

“I’m not really thinking about just my own future right now. I want to help the club achieve their goals and, of course, show myself as well.”

TBR View – Lazaro may have more to prove

There is surely no question that Lazaro has shown promise. There have been bright moments from the versatile midfielder.

But he appears to have more to prove before the large majority of Newcastle fans give a summer move their backing.

Some appear to be very hopeful about the prospect of signing him permanently. Meanwhile, there are others who seem less sure.

So it will be very interesting to see what the future holds for Lazaro. He himself seems unsure about what is to come at this stage.
