New Newcastle United goalkeeper Mark Gillespie is “unreal”, “terrific” and boasts “magnificent” form, according to fans of the club where he plied his trade for the last two years.
On Friday, the Magpies snapped up the 28-year-old free agent, who hails from Newcastle and is a boyhood fan, on a three-year contract.
Gillespie started his career at St James’ Park at academy level before moving to Carlisle United in 2008 aged 16, making 180 appearances for the Cumbrians.

Gillespie went on to join Walsall in 2017, spending a season in the West Midlands.
In 2018, he joined Scottish Premiership side Motherwell, where he became their first-choice stopper, helping them to finish third in the league last season.
Gillespie left Well upon the expiry of his contract, having made 67 competitive appearances for the Scottish club in all competitions and keeping 25 clean sheets.
The 6ft 1in stopper will be back-up to first-choice Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow after the long-serving Rob Elliot left St James’ Park.
Though Motherwell fans were sad to see Gillespie go, they were pleased to see him join his boyhood club and thanked him for being such a superb servant to their club.
