Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has praised teammate Allan Saint-Maximin for his performance against Manchester City.

The Frenchman was sensational as the Toon stunned the reigning champions, racing into a 3-1 lead before being pegged back.

Speaking to the BBC’s Footballer’s Football Podcast, Wilson said that he has never seen Saint-Maximin play better than he did on Sunday.

His co-host, West Ham United striker Michail Antonio, said that the wideman was ‘frightening’ and Wilson went into more detail.

Wilson hails Saint-Maximin

Wilson said: “Allan Saint-Maximin, by the way. Unreal performance from him. Probably the best I’ve seen since I’ve been at the club.

“That’s him, that’s what he has in the locker. I think the tricky thing is and the challenge is consistency.

“Obviously he’s played against Kyle Walker who is one of the best right-backs in the world and given him a run for his money and a tough game.

“Walker even said after the game it was difficult, so hats off to Allan for the way he impacted the game. That’s him, we just need more from him.”

As Wilson said, the key now for Saint-Maximin is to keep that form going on a regular basis for Newcastle.

We all know he can do that to the very best players and teams but consistency remains an issue that he needs to resolve.

He put on Instagram after the game that he is playing for a place at the World Cup with France, and the only way to get there is keep up that form every week.
