Liverpool forward Sadio Mane has been named by Alan Shearer in his Premier League Team of the Season to date.
The 28-year-old has enjoyed another superb season at Anfield, playing a crucial role as the Reds surged 25 points clear at the top of the Premier League table and on the brink of a first title since 1990.
Mane has claimed an impressive 18 goals and 12 assists in 38 appearances in all competitions this term, while his overall tally for Liverpool stands at 77 goals and 34 assists from 161 appearances.
Shearer named four forwards in his XI, Mane taking his place alongside Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero and Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy.
“Mane has grown from strength to strength this season,” Shearer wrote on the Premier League website.
“His 14 Premier League goals have been worth 18 points to his team, more than any other player in the competition.
“Rapid, powerful and deadly in front of goal, the Senegalese has been unplayable at times this campaign.”
Since making the move from Southampton to Liverpool in the summer of 2016 for £34million, Mane has been simply sensational for Jurgen Klopp’s side and is getting better with each passing season.
In an interview with The Times on Tuesday, Mane reiterated his desire and outlined his determination to become only the second African player after George Weah in 1995 to win the prestigious accolade.
Should Mane continue the way he is and Liverpool continue to stack up trophies, surely it’s only a matter of time before his dream becomes a reality.
