‘Unlucky for me’: Rangers-linked ‘unbelievable’ player talks missing out on Ibrox move

Glasgow Rangers were linked with Vaclav Hladky over the summer but Steven Gerrard opted to bring Jon McLaughlin to Ibrox in the end.

Meanwhile, Hladky – who left St Mirren in the summer after his contract ran out – has since moved on to English League Two side Salford City.

The Czech stopper has now spoken to the Glasgow Times about Rangers’ interest in him and his thoughts on their eventual decision to sign another keeper instead.

“Rangers tried to get some information but they decided on another goalie,” said Hladky. “It was between myself and him, maybe one more.

“It was unlucky for me but football is like that. You need luck as well as good performances so when Rangers picked another goalkeeper I had to move on to try and get another opportunity.

“It was nice because it proves your worth. I’m always happy when someone is interested in me, especially these great and big clubs. But it is what it is, maybe in future you never say never.”

Hladky was in brilliant form for St Mirren last season, making 38 appearances and keeping 10 clean sheets in the Scottish Premiership and 14 in all competitions.

Back in March, St Mirren skipper Sam Foley told PA – as quoted by FourFourTwo – of his now former teammate: “He’s had an unbelievable season and he is an unbelievable goalkeeper.

“There’s no doubt in my mind he will end up playing at a much higher level than the Scottish Premiership. It’s only a matter of time.”

Whilst it’s a shame that Rangers haven’t gone for the 29-year-old – not to mention seeing him in the English fourth tier – there can’t be many complaints at the Ibrox end given how watertight their defence has been this term.

And the fact Hladky was so complimentary of Rangers, even leaving the door open to a future move, shows the Ibrox camp should definitely still keep an eye on him – after all, his contract only runs until 2022.
