‘Unfortunately, he isn't wrong’: Some Liverpool fans react as Hamann tells Klopp to sell his ‘worst buy’
Some Liverpool fans have been reacting on social media after Didi Hamann told The Athletic that Jurgen Klopp should sell Naby Keita this summer.
Hamann believes Keita has failed to live up to the hype surrounding his then club-record £48m arrival in 2018. The Guinea international has been plagued with injuries throughout his time at Anfield, but has retained Klopp’s backing.
Keita missed 20 of the 38 Premier League fixtures last season with various issues. He also only started seven of his 10 appearances from the 18 he was available for, while making a further six outings in the cup competitions.
Keita’s total 521 minutes on the field was the least the 26-year-old has made in the top-flight since joining Liverpool. Last season was also the first time that the 38-cap Guinea international failed to score or assist, either.
The former RB Leipzig dynamo had enjoyed his most creative league campaign in 2019/20 with two goals and three assists. His goal involvements even came from less appearances (18) and minutes (813) than in his debut Reds season (1,393 minutes over 25 games).
Hamann: Keita ‘hasn’t done enough’ under Klopp
But Hamann now believes Liverpool have seen enough from Keita that Klopp should call time on his Liverpool career. The former Reds midfielder feels the £120,000-per-week talent, who remains keen to stay at Anfield, would be the best option for the German coach to improve his summer transfer budget.
“It’s been three years now and, you have to say, he’s struggled to make his mark,” Hamann said. “There’s been a gulf between the expectation levels when he came in and what he’s been able to deliver. It just hasn’t worked out.
“He’s had a lot of injuries and when he has played, he hasn’t done enough. He can’t have any complaints — too often he’s been given chances and not taken them. He doesn’t link play particularly well; he likes to run with the ball and do his own thing.
“I can’t see there being much of a market for him in England, but his stock is still pretty high in Germany from what he did at Leipzig. You’d be lucky to get more than £15m for him. Sometimes you just have to accept something hasn’t worked out and move on.”
Liverpool fans react to Hamann’s comments
But not all Liverpool fans agree with Hamann that Klopp should look to sell Keita this summer. Instead, they question who the Reds boss would be able to bring in and replace the midfielder with if he were to leave for just £15m.
However, a lot more agree with the former Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Germany star. That’s because they also feel Keita has been a disappointment at Anfield and has missed too many games through injury.

I would take it. That’s about 1m per game he would play.— Doc (redacted) (@Twel864) June 21, 2021
Exactly. Guess no clubs want to take chances for this guy. Too injury prone. Can't put a run of 10-15 games together. Such a shame.— _PoorScouserTom (@_PoorScouserTom) June 21, 2021
That's why he is worth another season, who you bringing in for £15m 🤔— Gavin 🤪 (@Gavstar79) June 21, 2021
Unfortunately, he isn't wrong😞— kazoorice (@wearewinnin) June 21, 2021
But I still think Klopp will give him one more chance like with Matip as well. A world beater on his day, but those days are very infrequent.
I still remember his unreal vision and pass to Mané v Villa last season. Would love that Keïta back.
This lad is a joke e needs to be sold and replaced with someone better and fit, there is no room for sentiment, his job is to play football and not to spend more time on the treatment table than the pitch— Lala 🇳🇬🇺🇸 (@KeansoLala) June 21, 2021
Klopps worst buy ever. This guys is the 2nd most expensive outfield player to have supposedly played for Liverpool.— Mohsin Mohamed (@KopBeard) June 21, 2021
Time to move on past the crooks and crocks occupying our bench and medical room. Ox the same.
