Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is quietly playing the best football of his career right now – but he’s certainly a player who divides opinion amongst Spurs fans.

Hojbjerg has been ever-present in the Spurs side since making the switch from Southampton back in 2020.

The 27-year-old has proven to be an astute signing and has arguably been one of the most consistent performers at the club over the past two years.

Martin Keown said Hojbjerg does an ‘underrated’ job for Spurs before the recent north London derby. But this season, he’s quietly taken his game to another level under Antonio Conte.

Hojbjerg quietly playing the best football of his career

Hojbjerg enjoyed a brilliant spell under former boss Jose Mourinho after he arrived in north London.

The Denmark international really thrived playing in the Portuguese boss’ system as he protected the Spurs back four.

Mourinho’s men were top of the league at one point during the 2020-21 campaign, but their form dipped after a 2-1 loss to Liverpool at Anfield.

He’s a player that divides opinion amongst the Spurs faithful but he’s clearly a player Conte trusts wholeheartedly.

The Dane has started in every single game so far this season. And during the last campaign, he only missed two Premier League matches.

But now, Hojbjerg is arguably playing the best football of his career under Conte as the midfielder’s all-round game has been excellent this season.

Hojbjerg has always excelled defensively for both Spurs and Southampton. But this season, he’s showing there is so much more to his game.

He has often been an effective creative outlet for Denmark as he’s given more licence to roam forward. And he’s having a similar impact for Tottenham now.

The midfielder has already equalled his best goal-return in the Premier League in a Spurs shirt this season, as he’s netted twice in just 9 appearances.

He’s also registered two assists, with one coming in the Champions League against Marseille.

Hojbjerg is taking his all-round game to another level under Conte. And while he may not be the most glamorous player in the Spurs side, he’s proving to be exactly the type of midfielder that thrives in the Italian’s system.

The Dane is now entering his prime years as a footballer and he’s been consistently excellent in Spurs’ midfield this season. Hojbjerg contributes in all areas of the pitch – whether it’s breaking up play, building attacks or even creating and scoring goals.

Hojbjerg looks set to remain a first-team regular in north London and Conte will be hoping his midfield general can continue his consistent form for Spurs.
