Now that the Premier League season is over, WhoScored.com has released its Premier League Team of the Year based purely on in-game statistics.
And there is one shock name in defence: Newcastle United’s Fabian Schar has been named alongside Virgil Van Dijk at centre-back.
The Switzerland international received an average seasonal rating of 7.3 This earned him a spot in the Team of the Season.
Schar joined Newcastle from Deportivo La Coruna last summer. The 27-year-old has played 28 games this season and his goal return of four is impressive for a central defender.
He has also demonstrated his ability to play in midfield, which is useful for Rafa Benitez. Often underappreciated by neutral fans, Schar’s performances for Newcastle have been impressive this term.
Alongside Schar and Van Dijk, Ricardo Pereira (Leicester) and Lucas Digne (Everton) make up the back four. Fernandinho (Man City) and Paul Pogba (Man United) are in central midfield.
On the wings, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and Man City’s Raheem Sterling feature. Meanwhile, Mo Salah (Liverpool) and Sergio Aguero (Man City) are named as a two-man attack.
But Schar’s presence in the side should get people talking. He has been undervalued by many spectators who do not regularly follow Newcastle. But Magpies fans will tell you just how good Schar is.
