Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones has been praised by Ian Wright, who described the Reds academy graduate as an “absolutely fantastic” and “unbelievable” player.

The 19-year-old has risen through the ranks at Liverpool and has come a very long way in the last couple of years, culminating in a great 2020 for him.

In early 2018, Jones signed his first professional contract at Anfield and made his Liverpool Under-23s debut.

This year, the young maestro scored Liverpool’s winning goal against Merseyside rivals Everton in the FA Cup third round.

Jones also became the Reds’ youngest ever captain in the FA Cup fourth-round replay against Shrewsbury, and ended 2019-20 with 12 senior appearances in all competitions.

This term, meanwhile, he has made 16 appearances, including five starts in the Premier League and four in the Champions League, and has scored three goals including the winner against Ajax.

Speaking on Ringer FC’s Wrighty’s House podcast, the Arsenal legend praised the way in which Jones’ talent has been developed and labelled him “the future” of the Anfield club.

“The way they’ve nurtured him up to this point, I’m watching him doing backheel flicks, passing simply, taking his opportunity to get in the box, shooting when he has the opportunity,” said Wright.

“He just looks like a complete player already. Yes, Thiago’s going to come back in, can Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain shift back in now with the way he plays?

“You look at him and you think yeah, he’s the future and he’s probably going to be there for many years, he’s absolutely fantastic. Unbelievable.”

In a short space of time, Jones has gone from being a talented prospect at Liverpool to a bona fide first-teamer and, despite his young age, doesn’t look one bit out of place in a Reds side brimming with talent.

Earlier this year, Goal.com recognised his talent and potential by naming him at number 27 in their NxGn 2020 list, but surely he’ll be much higher up next year – it wouldn’t be surprising were he to make the top ten.
