Guglielmo Vicario has named one player Arsenal sold for just £17 million as the Premier League’s best in his position, suggesting that he is an ‘unbelievable’ player.
Guglielmo Vicario has been a revelation in the Premier League this season. The Italian arrived for £17 million as Tottenham looked to find their replacement for Hugo Lloris.
James Maddison was amongst those to admit that they knew nothing of Vicario before he signed. But the 27-year-old has established himself as one of the best in the division.
Guglielmo Vicario lauds Emiliano Martinez
Of course, the Premier League is blessed with a number of outstanding goalkeepers right now. Ederson has been a stalwart of the Manchester City side for a number of years. But there are also the likes of David Raya, Nick Pope and Jordan Pickford plying their trade in the division.

Vicario was asked by ESPN about the best of the best. And he opted for Alisson Becker, as well as Emiliano Martinez at Aston Villa.
“In the Premier League there are a lot of top goalkeepers, I like to watch every goalkeeper in the way he behaves, the way he saves, his style of goalkeeping,” he said. “Emi Martínez and Alisson are for me the two top keepers in the league so if I have to say someone, I say these two guys because they are doing unbelievable, they play with risk, take risks playing from the back, they are very brave to go out and to clear situations so of course I look to other keepers.”
Arsenal may rue fee they sold Argentinian for
You could understand why Arsenal felt compelled to sell Martinez in 2020. At the time, Bernd Leno was arguably one of the most reliable goalkeepers in the division. And Martinez had only got his chance after the German had sustained an injury.
The decision to sell Martinez has not hurt Arsenal. Aaron Ramsdale has proved to be an inspired signing. And David Raya is now silencing his doubters following his surprise summer move.
But you cannot deny that Martinez has reached incredible heights since joining Aston Villa. His form around that time saw the 31-year-old force his way into the Argentina fold. And of course, he has now won the Copa America and the World Cup for his country.
If you would have one criticism of the Gunners, it is that they let Martinez go for £17 million. If Aston Villa sold him today, he would cost so much more.
