‘Unbelievable’ £40m midfielder now definitely won’t be joining Newcastle this month

Newcastle United now won’t be signing Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips this month, with a deal considered too expensive.

Phillips is a target for a number of clubs and Newcastle have been one of the teams mentioned as holding a big interest.

Eddie Howe has been clear that he’d like to add new signings this month. However, the Newcastle boss also knows finances are a problem and he could be left with no new signings at all.

And according to a report from The Sun today, those financial restraints mean a deal for Phillips is now deemed impossible.

Newcastle won’t be signing Kalvin Phillips in January

According to the report, Phillips won’t be signing for either Newcastle or Juventus this month due to the finances involved.

As well as the large wages he’s on at Man City, there’s also a £5m fee involved to take him for the next few months. That’s put a number of clubs off, including Crystal Palace.

Lauded as an ‘unbelievable‘ player by former Leeds teammate Jack Harrison, Phillips has not quite had things his own way at The Etihad.

Phillips is well down the pecking order under Pep Guardiola and is now facing a big decision as he looks to seal a place in England’s Euro 2024 squad.

With Newcastle seemingly out of the race, Phillips will be hoping another club can come up with the money to make a deal work. City are believed to want £40m as well to consider a permanent sale.

Phillips needs a move

If it’s not going to be Newcastle and it’s not going to be Juventus, two clubs who seemed so keen, then it might start worrying Phillips.

He simply has to move on this winter and get a move somewhere. City are obviously happy for him to go as well but with clubs struggling for money, this could get twitchy for the former Leeds man.

Most teams in the Premier League would take Kalvin Phillips in their team. Maybe, then, a dip in wages might have to come into the equation if he is serious about playing.
