Unai Emery has said he is doing his utmost to try and keep Arsenal skipper Laurent Koscielny at the club, despite his desire to leave.
As per the Sun, Emery has made no secret of his desire to convince the Frenchman to perform a U-turn after he refused to go on the club’s pre-season tour of America.
Emery said: “Koscielny is a very important player for us and I don’t lose hope for him to be with us next season. I am speaking regularly with him and I am trying to convince him to stay with us.
“But at the moment his first idea is still to leave and this situation is making us change our ideas about the centre-backs. It makes a big difference to us if Laurent plays or not.”
Even if Koscielny had remained professional and gone on tour, Arsenal would likely have been able to get some money in return if he did end up leaving.
But he has made the situation very difficult – the lack of quality Arsenal have at centre half is laid bare by the fact Emery is personally trying to change the mind of an ageing player who has gone to great lengths to leave.
Some Gunners fans may not like the idea of their manager going to a player who has let the club down in such a way, and Emery needs a new centre back through the door regardless – and it doesn’t seem as if Koscielny will stay anyway.
