Unai Emery never wanted to sell £5m player at Aston Villa

Aston Villa have sold a number of talented players in recent years.

Jack Grealish and Carney Chukwuemeka are two fantastic homegrown players who’ve had to leave Villa in recent times, while Jaden Philogene is another who Villa have let go in recent years.

Philogene has since become a star at Hull City, and, interestingly, it now looks as though the winger will be on his way back to Villa Park.

Speaking on the Claret and Blue Podcast, John Townley has been discussing Philogene’s impending return to Villa, and he says that Unai Emery never actually wanted to sell the £5m man to Hull, but, unfortunately the player was dead set on leaving to get more minutes.

Unai Emery never wanted to sell Jaden Philogene

Townley shared what he knows about the winger.

“It was never a question of a lack of talent that Villa didn’t rate him or whatever. Unai absolutely, Unai certainly wanted to keep him around, the club wanted to keep him around, but Philogene wanted to leave to play games,” Townley said.

Philogene’s gamble paid off

Jaden Philogene was taking a serious gamble when leaving Aston Villa to go and play Championship football at Hull, but his gamble has paid off massively.

Philogene’s move to Hull has almost ended up being just a glorified loan spell as he’s now set to return to Villa and likely be in a much better position to push for a first-team place.

It’s not hard to understand why Emery never wanted to sell Philogene, the winger is a top talent, and there’s a reason why the Midlands club are looking to bring the youngster back.

Philogene is now headed back to where it all started, and it sounds like he’s going to make a much bigger impact at Villa Park second time around.
