Unai Emery has lauded Calum Chambers’s attitude and joked that the Arsenal full-back did not listen to him during the Gunners’ 5-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Tuesday, in comments reported by Football London.
Chambers started against the Championship side after a promising cameo in the dramatic win over Aston Villa at the weekend.
And while he did not score, he managed to make a massive impact on the game. He provided three assists, including two smart crosses for Gabriel Martinelli and Reiss Nelson.
And Emery was full of praise for the 24-year-old’s performance – even if the Englishman ignored the instructions that he had been given ahead of the game.
“He helped. He helps us. in training, in the dressing room, if you want him to play right-back, centre-back, left-back. We can use him in midfield too,” he said, as reported by Football London. “His performance starts with his attitude. His attitude is amazing.
“Tonight I told him when he played at left-back ‘be calm here, help and support Bukayo [Saka], give the ball to Dani Ceballos’. He was overlapping lots of times with Bukayo. He did one very good pass for the goal for [Reiss] Nelson. He didn’t listen to me.”
Chambers has not had the easiest time since moving to the Emirates. He had been out on loan in two of the last three seasons, and some would have been forgiven for wondering if he was ever going to make the grade in North London.
The former Southampton man still has plenty to prove. And it is not going to be easy for him to hold down a place in the team, especially after Hector Bellerin and Kieran Tierney featured against Forest.
But there is no question that he has made a fantastic start to the campaign. And perhaps he may prove to be one of the surprises of the season for the Gunners.
