Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is said to be working around the clock to convince one of the club’s key transfer targets to join this summer.

Having secured Champions League football last season, Emery has every right to be ambitious in the transfer market, with Villa eyeing several moves.

Signing a midfielder seems to be on the agenda, and not necessarily because of all the Douglas Luiz rumours.

Juventus are said to be pushing to sign the Brazilian, with talk of a swap deal for Luiz including Weston McKennie – a move that currently seems unlikely.

Villa would surely be loath to lose their star man, especially given all that the club has to look forward to next season.

Instead, the club are trying to recruit a midfielder for the challenges mentioned, someone in addition to Ross Barkley.

Lazio’s Matteo Guendouzi is said to be a firm favourite of Emery, a deal that is perhaps on the back-burner for now.

But following reports yesterday, it’s very clear that Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher is at the top of the list.

Unai Emery desperately wants Conor Gallagher to choose Aston Villa

Rated at around £50m according to The Guardian, Villa are now known to be seriously interested in signing Gallagher, a statement move following last season’s progress.

It’s peculiar to see a player of that echelon potentially available, and Emery is said to be determined to not let the opportunity pass the club by.

In competition with Tottenham Hotspur, the report mentions that Emery absolutely loves the energy Gallagher plays with.

The Villa boss is determined to convince Gallagher to join the club this summer, a player who Chelsea are expected to welcome bids for.

Mauricio Pochettino was adamant that he didn’t want his ‘unbelievable‘ midfielder to be sold, as was also the case with linked-away Trevoh Chalobah.

Of course, Enzo Maresca is not expected to have the overriding say in such decisions, part of the reason he was deemed a better fit.

But from Aston Villa’s perspective, they are absolutely right to be chasing a home-grown talent who can seriously improve their XI.

Should it be needed, both Ollie Watkins and Ezri Konsa are on hand in the England camp with Gallagher right now, ready to provide a strong recommendation.

And judging by the information shared, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Emery had tasked the pair to do so.

All that being said, Villa could also launch a bid for an Arsenal player if they can offload players first
