Unai Emery appears to have committed himself to bringing a new generation of young talents through at Arsenal. Academy products such as Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Reiss Nelson and Joe Willock have all begun the new Premier League campaign as members of the starting XI.
20-year-old midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has also been present in the heart of the pitch for the Gunners. The Frenchman joined the north London club last summer and made 48 appearances in his first season. Guendouzi impressed with his tenacity, maturity and composure in possession.
Emery clearly has a great deal of faith in the former Lorient man. As quoted by the official Arsenal website, the Spanish coach said of Guendouzi, “Matteo is very young but he has talent”.
However, the manager also believes that the youngster has plenty of room for improvement, stating, “we are working tactically and individually to improve, we are working with him on the videos and on the pitch and we are speaking to him because it’s a big challenge for me, for our coaches and for him to achieve a big level here. He is in this process…But really I am very, very optimistic with him because he has this talent and I think we can also improve him on other things, like physically we are working with him in the gym, and mentally”.
It should encourage Arsenal fans to hear that Emery still believes Guendouzi can be pushed harder. It would be easy to be satisfied with the level the midfielder is already performing at considering his young age. However, Emery realises what a special talent he is dealing with.
Guendouzi has the potential to become a lynchpin of this Arsenal side for years to come. He has the capacity to become an elite level, all-round midfielder. With this sort of support and coaching, Guendouzi should be aiming to take even more strides forward in his development this season.
