Tyler Roberts says he’d love to face Wigan again after Leeds defeat

Tyler Roberts has insisted to BBC Radio Leeds that he would love to get another chance at beating Wigan Athletic after Leeds United’s defeat to the Latics at the weekend.

Should the two sides find themselves in the same division next season, there is likely to be a shudder sent down many Leeds fans’ spines when the home game with Paul Cook’s side approaches.

Of course, the defeat to Wigan last season continues to be held up as one of the most defining results from Marcelo Bielsa’s first season in the Championship.

Leeds went from being 1-0 up and having a numerical advantage after Cedric Kipre was sent off, to handing Sheffield United the initiative in the automatic-promotion race by somehow losing 2-1.

And the Latics were responsible for putting another dent in the Whites’ promotion hopes this term.

Leeds dominated Saturday’s game. Whoscored.com shows that they had 19 attempts on goal throughout the game, while the visitors had just five.

Nevertheless, Kiko Casilla was the goalkeeper who had to pick the ball out of his net as Pablo Hernandez’s freak own goal settled the contest.

But despite Wigan being the only side to claim two away victories against Bielsa’s Leeds, Roberts insisted that he would welcome another chance to come up against them.

“Obviously with last season, it’s not a nice feeling for them to come here and get another three points,” he told BBC Radio Leeds.

“But I would love to play them again and prove to everyone that we are better than them and can beat them. It’s just one of them things.”

TBR View – Roberts’s confidence uplifting

Roberts’s confidence may provide some comfort to the Leeds fans. The supporters seem extremely concerned that Saturday’s result could prove as infamous as last season’s meeting when the campaign concludes.

But the Wales international’s comments suggest that the team are not reading too much into the result.

It is one bad scoreline. Of course, Leeds have not been at their best lately. But Roberts is clearly choosing to focus on the fact that the Whites have the quality to get across the line.
