Tyler Roberts has signalled the opening day of the Premier League season as the moment he and the team realised that they had what it takes to compete in the division.

Speaking to The Mirror ahead of tonight’s clash against Liverpool, the 22-year-old striker admitted that Marcelo Bielsa’s squad showed they had the quality to play in the English top-flight right from the get-go in their league opener against Liverpool, which ended in a thrilling 4-3 victory to the reigning Premier League champions.

Leeds have been impressive in their first season back at the top of English football, with the Yorkshire side defeating the likes of Manchester City, Leicester and Everton as the Whites currently sit 10th in the Premier League standings, and for Roberts, the club showed they had what it takes to compete in the league right from the start.

Roberts said when reflecting on their Premier League opener against Liverpool: “It just showed that we could hold our own against the best. I think we thought we could do that but it really showed the world of football that we could.

“It was the first game of the season and, no matter how much belief you have in yourself and your team, you always work out from that first game where you’re at and so to be able to perform like that, score three goals at Anfield made us think: ‘Yeah, we can do this.’”
