Sunderland are set to hand Canadian international David Edgar a trial at the Academy of Light next week. The Black Cats boss Jack Ross confirmed to the Chronicle that Sunderland were keen to take a look at the former Newcastle United defender as a possible free agent signature.

He seems a good option. Edgar has played under managers such as Eddie Howe and Sean Dyche during his English career. His spells with Burnley and Sheffield United were particularly successful.

He has been without a club since leaving Ottawa Fury in October but his comeback to football deserves high praise.

A deal at Sunderland would highlight an incredible turnaround for a player who suffered a serious knee injury in December 2016.

As reported by former club Vancouver Whitecaps he was the victim of a hit-and-run accident whilst golfing in Scottsdale Arizona. He suffered serious damage to his knee. As reported by the Globe and Mail, he underwent surgery in January 2017 to repair the posterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament and meniscus in his right knee.

Now, two years later, he is looking fighting fit again, recently appearing on the bench for his nation against St Kitts and Nevis.

Sunderland will be right to look over the player. But if he can prove himself Sunderland will be bringing in a solid option to help their defensive duties.
