Two-time Premier League champion thinks Arsenal have made a ‘great signing’ who’s bound to improve

Arsenal newcomer Thomas Partey is a “great signing” for the Gunners, Michael Essien has told

The Ghana legend also thinks the 27-year-old midfielder is bound to improve now he’s in the “brilliant” Premier League.

Partey made the switch to Arsenal from Atletico Madrid shortly before the transfer window closed, the Gunners triggering his £45million release clause.

The Black Stars international signed a long-term deal at the Emirates Stadium after he completed his medical and paperwork just before the 11pm deadline.

Partey has made three appearances for Arsenal so far and has quickly caught the eye, already looking like a much-needed acquisition for the Gunners.

“I wish him well and I am looking forward to seeing him do very well for Arsenal,” Essien, a two-time Premier League winner with Chelsea, told

“They have made a great signing by bringing my countryman to take on the Premier League.

“He is more of a typical No.6 than me. He is very good on the ball, wins duels, has good speed, reads the danger well and he is a very complete midfielder.

“I think the Arsenal I played towards the end of my career could have done with a player like Thomas Partey.

“I think it is a great move for him too, though. Arsenal is a great club. The Premier League is also brilliant, so it will help him to improve his game as well.”

Even prior to deadline day, Arsenal had enjoyed a decent transfer window, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s new deal finally put that saga to an end.

However, a solid, high-calibre complete midfielder continued to elude the Gunners, and many fans were growing exasperated with the lack of movement on that front.

All’s well that ends well, however, with Partey now an Arsenal player, and already he’s looking like a player the Gunners desperately needed.

Like Essien said, as Partey plays more Premier League football and gets more minutes under his belt, his game is bound to improve – music to the ears of Arsenal fans and Ghana fans alike.
