Two interceptions, three tackles: Liverpool star produces brilliant, yet surprising defensive stats

Liverpool cruised past Merseyside rivals Everton at Goodison Park with a 4-1 win – and Diogo Jota deserves enormous praise for his defensive work.

Jota got his name on the score sheet, the 24-year-old’s ninth goal in 17 games this season. A brilliant finish, rounding of Liverpool’s 4-1 trouncing.

Everton were not at the races for about 80 minutes of the match – enjoying a 10-minute spell just before half-time in which Demarai Gray scored.

Jordan Henderson started the rout with a left-footed effort, before Mo Salah made it two with a trademark curling finish. Gray then got one back.

It was three when Salah raced through on goal, before Jota added a bit of glitter to a perfect performance. But his stats were stunning, on Wednesday.

Jota stats: Is Liverpool star slightly underrated – after Everton display?

Yes, Jota was excellent going forward before he was replaced by Japan international Takumi Minamino on 87 minutes, by Jurgen Klopp.

But it was his defensive work that is both surprising, and sensational. As the middle man in a front three, he produced three tackles, as per WhoScored.

The second most in his team, behind Andy Robertson’s five. Not only that, but Jota also managed two interceptions – again second, behind Fabinho.

Three aerial duels were won by Jota despite only being 5ft 8in. It was a battling display from Jota – a side of his game that goes under the radar.
