How Twitter reacted to Javier Manquillo’s Newcastle United switch

Javier Manquillo has joined Newcastle United to become their fourth summer signing of the transfer window. He arrives on a permanent deal from Atletico Madrid after loan spells with Sunderland, Marseille and Liverpool. Although he never managed to play a huge part in Spain, he has gained a lot of experience and will be keen to break into the first team fold at St James’ Park.

The Spanish full-back didn’t impress when on loan at the Magpies’ North East rivals, which has left many questioning the move. However, he was playing in a losing team and it was difficult to perform to the best of his ability in such an environment. His performances with Marseille, in particular, showed the talent that he does possess. Given time to adjust, he could prove to be a good squad player for Newcastle. The last player to join Newcastle after a mixed loan spell at Sunderland was DeAndre Yedlin and that turned out to be a success.

Rafa Benitez is working with a tight budget at St James’ Park and this was a cheap deal for the club to do. Manquillo won’t immediately be put into the first team, but he is there to increase competition for places. The Magpies’ boss is one of the best defensive coaches in the world and if he believes that he can work with his compatriot, supporters should place their faith in his judgement. There were concerns over Ciaran Clark last summer, but he emerged as one of the team’s most important players during their promotion campaign.

Although the signing may be underwhelming, it does underline that Benitez is control of recruitment and that is a positive sign in a summer of discontent. There have been plenty of rumours regarding the future of the Spaniard, but the signing of Manquillo shows that he is the one pulling the strings behind the scenes.

Supporters are aware that it is going to be a slow build, as they attempt to reach the top eight of the Premier League again. Manquillo isn’t going to get the pulses racing, but he is a solid squad addition with lots of top flight experience. He will only improve under the guidance of Benitez and it could prove to be a shrewd pick-up.
