Newcastle United have made their third signing of the summer, as Jacob Murphy joins the club from Norwich City. The fee is believed to be in the region of £12 million. The 22-year-old has been one of the Magpies’ priority targets this summer and they will be pleased that the winger is now a member of their squad.

There had been interest from a number of Premier League clubs due to his impressive performances for the England under-21s at the recent European Championships. However, it is Newcastle United that have managed to win the race for the winger and they will be hoping that he can take his game to the next level at St James’ Park.

Murphy graduated from the Norwich academy alongside his brother Josh. It was initially thought that his brother was the better of the two, but Jacob surpassed him thanks to a number of impressive loan spells in the lower leagues. He is predominantly a left winger and he has a great chance of going straight into the first team under Rafa Benitez, as Yoan Gouffran departed this summer.

Although the 22-year-old has never played in the Premier League, he had never played in the Championship before last season and he immediately made an impact at that level. He contributed nine goals and six assists, which is a good return for a winger playing in a team outside of the top six.

His pass completion of 69.1% is an area that must improve, but he has the attributes to become a good top flight player and Benitez will believe that he can get the most out of the winger.

There will need to be an adjustment in Murphy’s game to ensure he suits Benitez’s style of play. His defensive contribution needs to improve, as he doesn’t do enough for his team out of possession. Newcastle United are likely to play with inside forwards, which suits the former Norwich man, as he is dangerous when he cuts into central areas with his dangerous long shots.

This is a much-needed breakthrough for Newcastle United after weeks of frustration in the transfer market. They will hope that they can press ahead with further additions to improve their squad ahead of their first season back in the Premier League.
