Andrew Robertson has become Liverpool’s third summer signing as the left-back joins from Hull City for a fee of £8 million. The Scottish international was given permission to leave the Tigers’ training camp on Wednesday to complete a move to Anfield and he will now link-up with his new team-mates ahead of the new season.
Kevin Stewart looks set to make a move in the opposite direction for the same fee. Although they are the deals are seen as separate, it does represent a swap of sorts and the Reds will believe that they are getting the better end of the deal, as they have needed to bring in a new left-back for over 12 months.
Last season, James Milner did well as a makeshift left-back and worked hard for the team, but he lacked the dynamism that Jurgen Klopp will want in the position. As a natural left-footed player, Robertson adds an extra dimension to the Liverpool team and will pose a bigger attacking threat than the man he is set to replace.
It will be interesting to see if he does go straight in the team, or if Klopp slowly introduces him as he learns the German’s style of play. There are few good full-backs and Robertson certainly represents a project. He isn’t the finished article by any stretch, but he has the attributes to develop into a fine player under the guidance of Klopp.
Hull City were a mess for the majority of last season, but Robertson was one of the few players that looked at home in the top flight. His work rate in defence and dribbling ability in transition make him perfect for the full-back role in a Klopp side.
Although there are areas that need work, such as his reading of the game and aerial ability, the 23-year-old is a good signing for Liverpool. At a fee of £8 million, he represents a steal in the modern market and could be worth three times that within 12 months. This is a smart deal, with little risk and it will be interesting to see how he deals with the step up.
