Newcastle United have signed Stoke City striker Joselu for a fee believed to be £5 million. The 27-year-old failed to make the grade at the Bet365 Stadium and scored four times in 27 during his only full season with the club. The supporters believe that he wasn’t utilised correctly or given a fair chance by Mark Hughes.
Rafa Benitez has stated publicly that he has been unhappy with the transfer business completed by the club, but he has been given the funds to sign the Spanish striker. Although he would have hoped to have signed a bigger name, Joselu will be a player that he knows a lot about through his contacts in Spain and he could yet prove to be a bargain. The Magpies’ boss is excellent at getting the best out of players and it will be interesting to see if he can get the 27-year-old scoring goals.
Joselu becomes the club’s sixth signing of the transfer window and there will be a desire to bring more in before the deadline. It was crucial that they signed at least one striker and they have achieved that with this transfer. He may lack the pedigree that supporters were hoping for, but for a price of £5 million, there is little risk for the club.
The Spaniard is a powerful striker, with a good turn of pace. He has the attributes to become a very good Premier League striker, but time is running out for him to prove himself. At the age of 27, it is nearing make-or-break for his career at the highest level. There were high hopes for him when he broke through at Real Madrid, but he has so far failed to break through the ten-goal mark in a major league. That will be his main aim for this season at St James’ Park.
He will arrive to offer competition for Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic, but there is an opportunity to secure the starting place for Newcastle. Neither of their current strikers have proven themselves in the Premier League. Joselu will be given a chance and it is up to him to take it.

Not many gaps left to plug in our side atm. Risky signings, yes, but I'd say most are upgrades on what we had/still have. #NUFC

The end for Mitrovic or will Rafa keep the Serb around? https://t.co/02Nf1mv6Vg

A lot of Newcastle fans were happy by his arrival:
Smaller fee means less pressure. I reckon Joselu will hit the ground running. Is in good form as well #NUFC

Could prove to be a good bit of business signing Joselu. Let Rafa get 2 or 3 more in and stop the club from being seen as a pantomime. #nufc

Joselu ticks a lot of boxes. Glad to hear how good his English is, but several Spaniards to help him settle in there now. Seems hungry #NUFC

Some weren’t convinced:
Happy to be proved badly wrong but if Joselu is our only striker signing this window then it's going to be one long season. Bargain basement

This Joselu must be really terrible, or an absolute bargain, because you get nothing for £5 million these days! #NUFC
