On Sunday night, it was announced that Dele Alli had won the PFA Player of the Year award for the second successive year. Second season syndrome is often talked about in the Premier League, but the 21-year-old midfielder has avoided that and instead taken his game to a new level. The other nominees for this award were Harry Kane, Michael Keane, Romelu Lukaku, Jordan Pickford and Leroy Sane. However, Alli was a deserved winner and will be eyeing further individual success in the future.

His contribution this season has been 16 goals and five assists. The 21-year-old is the highest scoring midfielder in the Premier League and his rise to the top has been remarkable. It was only two seasons ago that he was playing regularly in League One and now he is one of the biggest stars in this country. To win this award once is a huge achievement, but to win it two years in a row shows that the Tottenham man is a special player and it is exciting to think how far he can go in the game.

Alli has impressed across the board this season and he has shown great consistency. The stage is set for a new hero in this country and there is no reason why the Tottenham midfielder can’t take that mantle. Aside from his obvious technical ability, the 21-year-old is aggressive and does everything possible to win.

Last season, Alli contributed 10 goals and nine assists throughout the campaign. He has become better in the final third, with a goal involvement every 119.7 minutes compared to one every 130.1 minutes during his first top flight season. Interestingly, he is now creating fewer chances with only 1.5 every ninety minutes, which is down from 2 during the last campaign. Meanwhile, his total shots per ninety minutes have increased from 2.7 to 2.79. There is only a fractional increase, but the stats suggest he has been told to focus on getting into goal-scoring positions rather than playing a part in the build-up play.

Tottenham have one of the best creative midfielders in Christian Eriksen, therefore it is more beneficial for Alli to play on the shoulder. The change to a 3-4-2-1 formation at times this season has enhanced the relationship between the two, as they can both play in central areas and that has played a part in the England international’s great form.
