Twitter reacts as Morgan Schneiderlin joins Everton from Manchester United

Morgan Schneiderlin has joined Everton for a fee rising to £24 million and he will now reunite with Ronald Koeman at Goodison Park. The pair know each other well from their days together at Southampton and that is likely to have played a major part in this move. On the South Coast, Schneiderlin played the best football of his career and managed to break into the French squad. He will be hoping to return to that form over the coming months.

It was a frustrating time for the midfielder at Old Trafford, as he didn’t play a role that suited him under Louis van Gaal, while Jose Mourinho didn’t appear to fancy him from the off. He only played a total of 11 minutes in the Premier League this season and wasn’t seen as an option for the club, despite their problems in midfield at the beginning of the season. Last season, he played 29 times in the league, but he didn’t manage to reach the level that he previously had done at Southampton. He may attribute that to the limitations of Van Gaal’s system, but he will nevertheless go down as a failure.

For Everton, they will be attaining a proven Premier League midfielder, who will provide a good alternative to the ageing Gareth Barry. Koeman knows how to get the best from Schneiderlin and it could turn out to be one of the moves of the window if he manages to return to his Southampton form. At his peak at Southampton during the 2014/15 season, he averaged 6.3 ball retrievals per game, while his distribution was smart and he even chipped in with a few goals. He will be keen to prove to everyone that he remains a quality midfield player and that motivation will benefit Everton.

Many believe that playing alongside Victor Wanyama brought the best out of him and that should provide Everton fans with another reason to be confident. They already have one of the best defensive midfielders in the league in Idrissa Gueye. Schneiderlin should offer a good complement to him and as a pair, they will give the Everton defence solid protection. This should be a move that improves the defensive shape and aids the transition phase. Everton haven’t been great since the managerial change, but this is a move that will make them better. It will be interesting to see what other moves the club makes before the window closes, because Ronald Koeman doesn’t seem happy with the squad that he currently has available to him.
