Newcastle United midfielder Mo Diame has admitted that he might struggle to earn a contract extension, The Chronicle reports.

The former Wigan, West Ham and Hull midfielder’s contract is up at the end of the season and his future is unclear.

Diame needs to start two more games to trigger a one-year extension clause in his contract. But the 31-year-old is worried that his age will prevent him from earning a new deal.

With just three games left to play, the Senegal midfielder’s chances of starting two more matches are growing increasingly slim.

He told The Chronicle: “The situation is still the same: I need two more starts to get one extra year. But, I spoke with the club, and when we were talking about my contract, I asked for two years, and they don’t want that.

“Because we know what they want for this club; it’s difficult to get an extension when you are over 30 here. It’s not a problem for me; it’s football and part of the job. If I get the opportunity to stay, I will stay. And, if not, I will go somewhere else and enjoy my football.”

With doubt surrounding the future of Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden as well, this is a strange situation for Newcastle.

Shelvey has been linked with West Ham (The Northern Echo) while Hayden needs to move down south for family reasons (The Times).

If Shelvey, Diame and Hayden all leave, Newcastle will need to sign three new central midfielders to replace them.
