Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic on a three year contract. The Sun are amongst the sources to claim that the Red Devils will pay a handsome sum of £40 million for the Serbian international, who celebrates his 29th birthday on Tuesday.

Entering into the final year of his contract at Chelsea, Blues fans will surely be pleased and impressed at the fee that they have secured. Matic became a dominant feature at Stamford Bridge under Jose Mourinho, but saw his form tail off and become less impressive in his final season.

Under Antonio Conte, Matic was revived, but his success always looked short-lived. With Tiemoue Bakayoko brought in this summer, it was clear that Matic would no longer be first choice in the heart of midfield alongside N’Golo Kante and Matic was clearly not happy to take up a place on the bench.

Matic will wear the number 31 for Manchester United and is likely to be a welcome presence who will give support alongside the likes of Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba. His discipline seems set to liberate the duo and give them more freedom to roam forwards and attack, something that both players struggled to do with the likes of Marouane Fellaini for company in midfield.

In a symbolic signing, Jose Mourinho is clearly set to ensure that his team will be title contenders come the end of the campaign. That could see Matic make it three titles in the past four seasons.
