There were two notable omissions when Tottenham Hotspur’s U23 team took on Blackburn Rovers last night. Troy Parrott and Japhet Tanganga were left out in the 4-0 defeat against Blackburn.
Has Mauricio Pochettino just dropped a major selection hint, then? Spurs take on Colchester United in an away match in the EFL Cup tonight. And Pochettino is expected to rotate his squad, giving chances to some fringe players and youngsters.
Parrott and Tanganga were both left out of the U23 match, suggesting they could be involved in the first-team. It seems like the perfect time to blood two of the most promising academy players into the first-team picture.
Japhet Tanganga: Solid in pre-season
Tanganga is a promising young central defender who looked like one of Tottenham’s most assured defenders in pre-season. With Juan Foyth out injured, Tanganga is arguably the next in line for a Tottenham call-up.
The 20-year-old has never made his debut for the first-team in a competitive game but he caught Pochettino’s eye in pre-season. He should be able to perform well against League Two side Colchester tonight. This could help him stake a regular first-team claim.
Troy Parrott: Proven goalscorer at youth level
Parrott is probably Tottenham’s most exciting young player. He has been prolific at youth level and already has three goals in two games this year. The Republic of Ireland starlet also netted twice on his U21 international debut and he grabbed a third goal in the following game.
Consequently, Spurs fans want to see Parrott promoted to the first-team. The 17-year-old has the potential to become Harry Kane’s number two. And Colchester is an ideal test of his ability.
