Troy Deeney has told TalkSPORT (Monday, 7.40am) that he has been told that Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney is relentless in training, and compared the in-form Scottish defender to Liverpool veteran James Milner in terms of work rate.

Tierney, 23, scores his first goal for Arsenal on Saturday afternoon – as he opened the scoring in a 4-0 win over Sam Allardyce’s struggling West Brom. Cutting inside, Tierney curled an excellent effort past Sam Johnstone with his weaker right foot.

The left-back has been touted as a potential future captain of Arsenal given his passionate, heart-on-the-sleeve displays that he has seemingly learned from his time at Celtic – under the influence of Hoops skipper Scott Brown.

Not only that, but Tierney has become renowned for his intensity on the training ground – and his winning mentality, something which Freddie Ljungberg has raved about. Deeney told all on what he has been told about Tierney, comparing to Milner.

“I’ve heard he’s exactly the same as James Milner. He’s the best trainer, the best professional, I’ve heard from reliable people that he’s such a good trainer. He was gutted when he broke down, but he has immersed himself into what Arsenal is all about,” Deeney said.

TBR’s view – Is Tierney Arsenal’s best player right now?

In terms of what each player is expected to do in their position, Tierney is shining just as much as Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith-Rowe and Alexandre Lacazette are at this moment in time. Not only that, but he has captured the hearts of Gunners fans.

In what has been a dark period, Tierney – and Saka – have been Arsenal’s two best players. Despite his young age, he has shown leadership, tenacity and quality. He is only going to get better and Arsenal must make him a long-term option.
