Troy Deeney reacts to Dawson-Pereira incident in West Ham vs Fulham

Troy Deeney has claimed that he’s surprised to see Craig Dawson getting a chance at West Ham United. He also had his say on the incident involving the defender and Fulham’s Andreas Pereira at the London Stadium on Sunday.

The Hammers have now won three games on the bounce in all competitions thanks to a controversial 3-1 victory over the Cottagers on Sunday. All three of West Ham’s goals became huge talking points, but the incident leading up to Jarrod Bowen’s penalty in the 29th minute is what has been making the most noise.

Troy Deeney surprised that Craig Dawson is still playing for West Ham

Dawson went up for a corner that West Ham United won in the first half. He was his usual busy self inside the box, and it was Pereira’s job to contain him.

That, needless to say, was a total mismatch..

After two unsuccessful attempts to bring him down before the ball was even delivered into the box, the Fulham midfielder decided to have another go at Dawson, and the West Ham man went to ground. The referee rightly pointed to the spot.

Deeney was shocked to see Fulham put Pereira on Dawson for a corner. He further praised the Irons defender and then claimed that he didn’t expect him to be playing for West Ham this season after coming close to a move away in the summer transfer window.

He said on Ben Foster’s YouTube channel: “We know Daws really well, he will headbutt your head and you go ‘let the 5ft 4in guy mark him’. What’s happening, honestly?! I love Daws, he’s world class, but come on. Daws will headbutt the post to score.

“He’s doing really well by the way. I didn’t see that coming from West Ham, I thought he wouldn’t get in this year.”

TBR View:

Dawson was heavily linked with a move to Aston Villa and Wolves in the final few days of the summer transfer window. It looked very likely that he would move on, with David Moyes even publicly revealing (on Football London) that an offer for the defender had arrived from an unnamed club.

However, he stayed put in the end.

Dawson has started each of West Ham’s last two Premier League and Europa Conference League games. He has looked solid at the back for Moyes’ side and could prove to be a really important player this campaign.

We’re with Deeney here, we didn’t see this coming either after all the transfer speculation in the summer, but West Ham fans should be delighted that it has all worked out.
