Troy Deeney praises ‘flying’ Patrick Bamford

Leeds United may have been thrashed 6-2 by Manchester United at the weekend, but the manner in which the Whites have approached life back in the Premier League has seen them earn plaudits rather than criticism from many.

That includes striker Patrick Bamford. Before the season started many doubted his ability to find the net regularly in the Premier League.

However, the 27-year-old has scored eight goals in 14 appearances for Leeds in the Premier League this season.

One former Premier League striker is clearly impressed. Troy Deeney, who is now playing in the Championship following Watford’s relegation last season, believes that Bamford would have never imagined finding the net so regularly in the top-flight this season.

“Patrick Bamford would never have thought he was going to score this many goals,” Deeney told talkSPORT. “He may have had, in his head, (this thought) of ‘I’m going to score 20’ but realistically he’d have thought ‘if I can get into double figures I’ll be happy’.

“He’s flying. The team’s flying. They’ve got wingers as full-backs. It’s great to watch.”

Whilst the praise is warranted Leeds fans still want more from Bamford. His eight goals is an impressive total but he is still wasteful in front of goal, as he showed against United at the weekend.

Take away his stunning display against Aston Villa and Bamford’s five goals in 13 games would be less impressive.

Bamford could still be more of a threat in front of goal and Leeds fans know that. Hopefully, those dreams of 20 goals that Deeney spoke of can become a reality this season.
