A new era is about to begin at Manchester United.
Ruud van Nistelrooy signed off with a 3-0 win over Leicester City on Sunday before passing the reins over to Ruben Amorim, who has left Sporting CP to sign a contract at Old Trafford which runs until the end of the 2026/27 campaign.
The Portuguese tactician has a lot of talent to coach at Manchester United, with stars such as Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund, Amad Diallo, Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martinez, Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho now at his disposal.
In regards to the latter – however – Troy Deeney has shared why he is “disappointed” with the Manchester United No.17 after what he has heard from Old Trafford.
Troy Deeney upset with Alejandro Garnacho for letting criticism get to him
The Argentina international made headlines on Sunday, not only through his stunning goal, but for his decision not to celebrate such a strike.
Fernandes later revealed in his post-match interview that Garnacho didn’t want to celebrate as he doesn’t feel much love at Old Trafford right now, following a viral video in which a fan publicly criticised the South American to his face.
Discussing this situation, Deeney told talkSPORT: “I said it last night on Match of the Day, and I’ll repeat it. It goes twofold. One, it says what players are like nowadays, where their skin is so thin that one gentleman can say what he wants to say and everyone sulks.
“Secondly, if he’s getting affected by that, I would say to him, just as an older pro: ‘don’t think this football game is for you, big man’. You play for the biggest club in world football. If you play poorly, you’re going to get people on your case.
“If you play really well, you’re still going to get people on your case. You play for Man United.”
“It’s called jealousy and that’s part of the game. So disappointed that he didn’t celebrate. It’s an unbelievable goal, but this will be the making or breaking of him, because if he can’t handle that from one gentleman with an iPhone in his face, then I don’t think this is the game for him, unfortunately.”
Deeney is spot on – Chris Sutton also feels Garnacho should have celebrated his excellent goal.
Ruben Amorim must make Manchester United tougher
Nobody likes to be criticised, but the fan in question hardly said anything that horrible to Garnacho, and the reaction to those comments has been well over the top.
Deeney is right – regardless of whether you play well or not, people will always have a negative word to say, so why listen to any outside noise?
Garnacho needs to take notice only of Amorim, his teammates and his loved ones.

After all, the Argentine is doing tremendously well, winning an FA Cup for Manchester United at the age of just 20 with a goal against Manchester City in last season’s final, which ended 2-1 to the Red Devils, while he has already netted seven goals this term.
Hopefully, Amorim can ensure outside criticism does not get inside the head of Manchester United players this easily going forward, or else it could impact on the 39-year-old’s vision at Old Trafford.
