Trippier’s poor form this season explains Tottenham ramping up Aarons interest

Tottenham are ramping up their interest in Norwich City right-back Max Aarons over a summer move, according to the Daily Mirror.

They report that Spurs face competition from London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea for the teenage Canaries defender, but are currently ahead in the race.

Spurs were apparently keen on a January move for Aarons, but Norwich’s £15m asking price put them off – but only until the summer – because they have had such glowing reports about him.

Tottenham are reportedly keen to stick to their principles of developing young English talent and see Aarons as ideal to fit into that ideology.

And the form of Tottenham’s other right-backs this season is likely to have pushed Pochettino into the market for a potential upgrade in that position.

Serge Aurier has always been erratic and that has continued into this season, while Kyle Walker-Peters may have wanted more gametime but has made high-profile errors against Barcelona and Crystal Palace on the rare occasions he has played.

But England World Cup hero Kieran Trippier has been the biggest disappointment in that role; on the back of a sparkling summer, he has struggled for form upon his return to the club game.

He has been caught out defensively and has not offered the same attacking thrust, meaning that Aarons might conceivably have designs on a starting spot next season if he were to join.
