West Ham United could not carry their impressive post-lockdown Premier League form into the new season as they were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle United in London yesterday.
Goals from Toon newbies Callum Wilson and Jeff Hendrick proved enough for the win as David Moyes’ side put in a fairly insipid display that will further increase calls for some recruitment at the club.
It has been a difficult pre-season for West Ham’s owners. The only new recruit is Tomas Soucek, who arrived after a previous loan spell whilst the decision to sell young talent Grady Diangana was met by criticism from both fans and players at the club.

Clearly, West Ham’s ownership structure of David Gold, David Sullivan, and Karen Brady are struggling to find the money to help improve the first-team for Moyes and for one former Hammer, it is time the club’s hierarchy moved on.
Trevor Sinclair, who spent five years at Upton Park, took to Twitter after the game to suggest it is time the club was sold to owners better suited toward investing in the first-team squad.
Of course, plenty of West Ham fans will agree with that sentiment but it is also worth remembering that there is not a prospective football owners tree from which billionaires can be plucked.
Hopefully, West Ham reinvest the money raised from Diangana smartly and bring in the players Moyes feels necessary to strengthen the team for a Premier League campaign.
