In Friday’s edition of The Boot Room transfer round-up, Chelsea are once again being linked with a move for Everton defender John Stones.
According to the Mirror Sport, the 21-year-old England international could become the first signing of the Antonio Conte regime – despite the criticism he has been receiving for his recent club performances.
After having a string of big-money bids – including one of £37million – rejected last summer, reports suggest that the incumbent Italian head coach could re-ignite the London outfit’s interest.
Stones has made 27 appearances for the Toffees this term, and although his level of performances have dropped since Christmas, he is still seen as one of the up and coming youngsters in English football.
With club legend John Terry set to depart in the summer he could find himself replaced by a fresh face, in the form of the 21-year-old, who is admired for his ability by many of the greatest managers in the game.
He has become renowned for his confidence in possession and ability to play the ball from the back, having completed 88.5% of his total attempted passes this term, and a fresh start at Stamford Bridge could be the perfect tonic to his current struggles.
Meanwhile, The Sun report that Crystal Palace will make a summer move for Barcelona midfielder Alex Song, who currently finds himself on-loan at the Eagles’ London rivals, West Ham United.
The 28-year-old is currently in his second season on loan at Upton Park but, according to reports, no longer figures in Slaven Bilic’s plans. They have already told him they will not be taking up the option to sign him on a permanent basis.
Palace have been alerted to the fact that Song, who has made just eight appearances for the Hammers this term, could be available for as little as £4 million. Although, his somewhat disappointing second spell in England leave question over his suitability for the club.
With the classy Yohan Cabaye and trusty James McArthur currently occupying the holding midfield roles in Alan Pardew’s side, and also considering Song’s wage demands of £80,000 per week, this money would undoubtedly be better off spent elsewhere.
Should Everton’s John Stones leave for Chelsea this summer? Would he be a success at Stamford Bridge? Are West Ham making a mistake in not signing Alex Song on a permanent deal? Would the Hammers’ loss be Crystal Palace’s gain? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.
