'Training like a warrior': Leeds coach wowed by 18-year-old January signing who's a real 'threat'

Leeds United Under-21s manager Michael Skubala has praised Mateo Joseph after his hat-trick for the Under-21s on Friday night.

The Elland Road outfit’s U21s returned to the top of the Premier League 2 Division 2 table thanks to a 4-0 victory over Stoke City’s U21s.

Joseph was the standout for Leeds U21s, netting a hat-trick against the visitors at York City’s LNER Community Stadium.

In the 13th minute, the 18-year-old poked home from close range after Tommy Simkin fumbled the ball in the Potters goal.

Joseph then made it two just five minutes later, firing into the top corner after Sean McGurk and Sonny Perkins had efforts blocked.

Perkins then extended his superb scoring run two minutes before half-time for Leeds to go into break 3-0 to the good.

And Joseph completed his hat-trick seven minutes from time, smashing into the top corner from another Cody Drameh delivery.

‘He’s got that energy and desire’

The January signing‘s goals saw him regain the top scorer tag within the U21s side, edging beyond Perkins with his eighth of the season.

And Skubala, speaking to Leeds Live, believes he is getting the rewards for his efforts and work on the training ground.

“I think Mateo was fantastic tonight,” he said.

“He’s come in and out a little bit but he’s been training like a warrior and you can see that in his game.

“I think sometimes you can talk about some other players but Mateo is very humble and very quiet in a way but he’s really working hard.

“He’s got that energy and desire and we saw that in his goals and his finishing. He’s a threat for any defence.”

The Leeds academy has numerous very talented prospects within the ranks, and it’ll be exciting to see how they fare in the coming year or two.

How many of them will get game time for Jesse Marsch’s side – and maybe even become regulars?
