Trae Coyle has told Arsenal’s official website that he was impressed by Pablo Mari as the Gunners’ January signing made his first appearance for the club in their latest under-23 game.
Mari was one of two players Mikel Arteta brought in during the January transfer window. And the club’s supporters would have got their first glimpse of the centre-back playing for the side on Monday.
The under-23s were beaten 2-1 by Chelsea. Steve Bould’s men had initially taken the lead through Folarin Balogun, but had fallen behind by half-time.
Scoreline-wise, it may have been a disappointing 45 minutes for the home side. But there were positives with both Rob Holding and Mari featuring before coming off at the break.
And Coyle explained after the game that it is always good for the youngsters to play alongside first-team players. He also suggested that he felt that Mari’s bow was a good one.
“We’ve played with Rob a lot of times and he’s always been good with us,” he told the club’s official website.
“Obviously he has so much ability and I was very impressed with Pablo as well. Playing with those two was definitely a big help today.”
TBR View – Mari faces tough battle getting into Arteta’s side right now
It looked to be a smart move for Arteta to bring two defenders in in January. However, it does appear that Mari faces a tough battle getting into the first-team right now.
The Gunners have kept clean sheets in their last two games. Shkodran Mustafi has impressed a number of supporters in recent times, while David Luiz has also done extremely well.
With Arsenal still battling on three fronts, Mari’s time will surely come. But perhaps it should not be a surprise if he has to be a little more patient than he may have previously expected.
