‘It’s too easy’: Pundit thinks he’s spotted Tottenham’s biggest tactical problem v Newcastle

Andy Townsend believes he’s spotted why Tottenham aren’t producing what they should be under Antonio Conte, after another disappointing result.

Spurs relinquished their brilliant home record to compound a poor week of action which saw them dismantled at Old Trafford as well. It leaves them lagging behind Arsenal at the top, who themselves dropped points at Southampton.

Questions have been asked of Antonio Conte’s side in recent weeks, with some believing his defensive set up is stifling his team. However, speaking for Premierleague.com yesterday, former PL midfielder Andy Townsend believes the problem comes from Spurs’ use of the ball.

“I don’t think Spurs dominate the ball enough, they don’t knock it around. They’ve got brilliant forward players but there’s two sides to the game and I don’t think they have enough of the ball. It’s too easy for opposing teams to play it around against them,” Townsend said on PL Productions’ live feed.

Spurs desperately missed Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the middle of the park yesterday. The Dane was ruled out through injury and it was clear to see just why he is so important to this side.

Conte, meanwhile, once again bemoaned the depth of his squad afterwards in another apparent hint that he wants even more new players.

Two poor results in a row doesn’t make a season. But when certain supporters and pundits are on your back, these sorts of performances help the pressure build.

Townsend does make a point here about Spurs as well. All too often they seem to want to play on the counter and get it up to Son and Kane as quickly as possible. Sometimes, it’s best to control games and be patient.

Certainly, that’s what the top teams do who enjoy success.
