Tottenham’s sell-to-buy transfer approach will not ease concerns over squad depth

Tottenham cannot spend to bring in new players in the January transfer window until they offload some of their existing squad, according to the Daily Mirror.

They report that Mauricio Pochettino is not set to be backed by a transfer kitty to bolster his options and will have to offload some deadwood first.

The players apparently close to the exit door are flop strikers Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente, outcast winger Georges-Kevin Nkoudou and defensive midfielders Vincent Wanyama and Mousa Dembele, who have both seen injuries force them out of the first team picture.

Pochettino has said it would be ‘impossible’ to bring in fresh blood without making space for them first but that will not do much to solve his issues with regards to squad depth.

The money that will be raised for offloading five players who plainly have no future at the club and on whom any January business depends on will perhaps only be sufficient to bring in one player of the correct quality.

But Tottenham’s problem is not quality, it is depth, and unless they are willing to spend sufficient money to replace five outgoing players with three or four of the quality to help Mauricio Pochettino, the issues with regards a lack of options and fatigue will continue into the new year.

That is Tottenham’s biggest barrier to success right now – and their January policy shows no sign of easing it.
