Tottenham’s reported January plans would be against the grain

Tottenham could reportedly spend big in January on transfers, but the club’s fans should take that speculation with a pinch of salt.

According to the Daily Express, Spurs may spend £100million in the winter window in an attempt to improve their squad.

It is understood that West Brom’s Olivier Burke, Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele and Manchester United’s Eric Bailly are three main players on their shortlist.

But history suggests chairman Daniel Levy is unlikely to get out the chequebook midway through the season and the North London club didn’t even sign a single player in the recent summer window.

Current winger Lucas Moura is the only January signing in Spurs’ history to feature in the club’s top 10 most expensive transfers ever.

That highlights that the big-money moves usually take place during the summer and Mauricio Pochettino’s side would have to enter new waters to land their reported targets in January.

Spurs forked out £42million (BBC) for club record signing Davinson Sanchez back in 2017, but the notion of them splashing £100million in January seems unlikely and it would be a serious statement of intent if they did.

They have become top-four regulars in the Premier League in recent years, but their main competitors now have spending power that is swarming them at the moment.
