Tottenham’s recurring Maddison interest shows they should’ve gambled last summer

Tottenham want to bring Leicester playmaker James Maddison to the club this summer, according to a report by the Daily Mirror.

They report that Spurs have lined up the Englishman in the event that Christian Eriksen leaves the club – but the recent injury crisis that Mauricio Pochettino has suffered lately has highlighted a lack of creativity and options.

And Spurs apparently want more English talent to boost a dwindling homegrown quota which has seen them name reduced numbers in both their Premier League and Champions League squads this season.

But the Mirror also reported back in 2018 that Spurs were interested in Maddison during his time at Norwich City, when they demanded £25m for his services.

And now that Maddison has proved himself in the Premier League, the asking price for his services is only likely to have increased from that pricetag now.

That could cost Tottenham millions that they could have saved if they decided to take the gamble last summer if they do go back in for Maddison now that his reputation has only been enhanced.

That’s something which would not go down particularly well with a shrewd businessman like Daniel Levy, but if Tottenham want further attacking options and are targeting the English market, they might have to suck it up to get Maddison.
