Tottenham Hotspur players have taken to Twitter to celebrate their win over fierce rivals Chelsea last night in their Premier League clash at White Hart Lane.
Two headed goals from England’s Dele Alli ended Chelsea’s hopes of a record-equaling 14th consecutive league win as Spurs leapfrogged Arsenal and Manchester City into third place.
Spurs put in an exceptional performance in front of their home crowd on Wednesday night, stifling any attacking intent that Chelsea posed; Victor Wanyama was a huge part of this, playing an immense role in the heart of the Tottenham midfield as Chelsea’s attacking trio of Diego Costa, Pedro and Eden Hazard struggled to impose themselves on the match.
Alli’s first goal on the stroke of half-time broke the deadlock in a feisty first half put Spurs firmly in control at the break, before Christian Eriksen supplied his second pinpoint cross of the match for the 20-year-old’s second to put the game past Antonio Conte’s side.
The result sees Mauricio Pochettino’s side close the gap on leaders Chelsea to seven points, and sees them two behind Liverpool in second place.
Wanyama, who only just lost out on man of the match to goal-scoring hero Alli on the night, was the first to take to social media and praise his side after their victory.
Spurs defenders Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, as well as Wanyama’s midfield partner Mousa Dembele, also took to Twitter to celebrate their vital win.
Tottenham’s joint top goal-scorer in the Premier League, Harry Kane, praised the impact that the crowd at White Hart Lane had on the team, calling it an ‘unbelievable atmosphere’.
Could Spurs’ win over Chelsea re-ignite their title ambitions in the second half of the season?
