Tottenham’s other goalkeeping options after Fraser Forster concedes nine goals in a week

Fraser Forster endured another tough outing in between the sticks during Tottenham 3-6 Liverpool on Sunday.

The England international probably has a sore back right now given the amount of times he needed to pick the ball out of his net in this clash – a result which leaves Spurs 11th in the Premier League.

Of course, the Tottenham No.20 is only playing because Guglielmo Vicario suffered damage to his ankle during the recent 4-0 win over Manchester City, but he is quite evidently struggling.

Forster was awful against Manchester United as Spurs narrowly escaped a huge embarrassment in the Carabao Cup quarter-final on Thursday, gifting the Red Devils two goals to turn a comfortable 3-0 lead into a narrow 4-3 win.

After Fraser Forster shipped his fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth goals of the week against Liverpool, let’s take a look at who else Ange Postecoglou could call upon to guard the posts.

Brandon Austin

Brandon Austin has been with Tottenham since 2015 – rising through the youth ranks and eventually becoming a senior option in 2019.

However, the 25-year-old has never made a competitive appearance for Spurs despite spending almost a decade with the club.

Nevertheless, Austin still signed a new contract back in May which runs until June 2029 – suggesting Spurs rate him highly.

Dejan Kulusevski has also praised Austin – calling the Londoner a “very good goalkeeper” – so perhaps Postecoglou will give the Tottenham No.40 a chance ahead of Forster next time out at Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day.

Alfie Whiteman

Alongside Vicario, Forster and Austin in Tottenham’s goalkeeping department sits Alfie Whiteman.

The 26-year-old has actually gone one better than Austin and made a competitive appearance for Spurs, playing the final eight minutes of a 4-0 UEFA Europa League win over Ludogorets back in November 2020.

However, the Tottenham No.41 becomes a free agent at the end of the season, and Spurs are yet to tie him down to a new contract, suggesting those inside Hotspur Way rate Austin a bit higher.

Interestingly, the Mirror believe Tottenham want James Trafford from Burnley in the January transfer window, so perhaps Postecoglou has already given up on Forster, Austin and Whiteman.
