Tottenham’s Harry Winks should aspire to reach level of Thiago Alcantara

It was a night to forget for Tottenham Hotspur.

The north Londoners were thrashed 7-2 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League, with the result bringing the club crashing back down after the weekend win over Southampton.

Spurs took the lead in the game, but the Bavarian giants ended up ruthlessly smothering their opponents at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It is one of Tottenham’s greatest humiliations in recent times, and Mauricio Pochettino must now seek to pick his demoralised players up.

One man who can perhaps learn a lot from the defeat is Harry Winks, who has been in really good form for the club in 2019/20, despite the team’s collective struggles.

He produced arguably his worst display to date against Bayern having been completely outshone by Corentin Tolisso and, when he came on, Thiago Alcantara.

TBR’s view

The Bayern central midfielders produced scintillating displays, and Winks should be aspiring to reach their level.

Tolisso made an error on the first goal but was otherwise solid for the German champions and Thiago was sublime after coming on in the second half.

The Spaniard in particular is the kind of player Winks should be seeking to model his own game on.

The former Barcelona man rarely ventures forward and is a master dictator from deep with his passing ability.

Technician Thiago plays a similar role for Bayern and is therefore a perfect candidate for £50,000-a-week star Winks (Spotrac) to learn from.
