Tottenham’s Eric Dier explains illness which has kept him out of action

The England international feels his absence has been misunderstood.

Tottenham’s Eric Dier has lifted the lid on his prolonged absence from the first team picture which has seen him lose his international place too.

Speaking to the Guardian, £60,000-a-week (Spotrac) star Dier says he was never injured, he had an appendix problem which started in December 2018 last year and worsened.

He said: “It was quite serious. I was at home and I had to be rushed to hospital and I had the procedure straight away. I was very fortunate like that but it was just very difficult afterwards. I kept on getting ill.

“My immune system just really struggled with the medicine after the appendix and I kept on getting ill. People said I was injured but I was never injured. I just kept on falling ill. It was a very strange experience. It’s gone. I’m just looking forward now.”

TBR’s View – Could Dier help Tottenham out at centre back?

At present, Tottenham have two central defenders, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, who are in the final year of their contract.

Davinson Sanchez was clearly brought in as a long-term replacement for one of them and while Juan Foyth might have come to replace the other, he looks set to be redeployed at right back.

So that means that Mauricio Pochettino needs reinforcements there and with Harry Winks looking the long term solution at the back of midfield, Dier might find his best chance of gametime comes with a return to defence.
